Are Neck Pain and Headaches Related?

Neck Pain

It's not uncommon to experience headaches. In fact, many Americans suffer from headaches and of those many are considered chronic. What many people don't realize is that neck pain and headaches can be related. Specifically, cervicogenic headaches.

Cervicogenic headaches can be caused by an injury that results in whiplash or a pinched nerve in the neck. Other causes include arthritis, neck sprains, or neck fractures. They can also be caused by sleep position or poor posture.

At Lower Cape Chiropractic serving Cape Cod, MA, and Orleans, MA, we can help treat cervicogenic headaches. We are here to help you get pain relief from your symptoms and help you get back to your life.

Common Symptoms

Cervicogenic headaches usually present with symptoms on one side of the head and can vary in intensity from mild to severe. Other common symptoms include:

  • Stiffness
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands
  • Shoulder pain or stiffness
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, see a chiropractor on our team who can properly diagnose and treat your headache. Left untreated, they can lead to chronic pain and disability.

How Does a Lower Cape Chiro Treat Cervicogenic Headaches?

At our practice, we develop individualized treatment plans for each of our patients based on their unique needs. However, there are some common treatments that we often use to treat headaches, including:

Chiropractic adjustments/manipulations: This is one of the most effective treatments for relieving pressure on the nerves and restoring proper alignment of the spine.

Trigger point therapy: If there are knots or tight muscles in the neck or shoulders, trigger point injections can help to release them and provide relief from pain.

Therapeutic and healing exercises: These exercises help to strengthen the muscles and ligaments around the spine and improve range of motion.

Lifestyle advice: Sometimes, pain in the neck can be caused by poor posture or other lifestyle choices such as sleep position. We can help you identify potential causes of pain in your life and give you advice on how to overcome them.
